I have been fortunate to help develop pitchers from the amateur level to the pros.

 

There are 100’s of tools you can use.

 

Here are my top 5:

 

1. Plyo Balls (Mechanics/Velo/Arm Care)

 

These are great for multiple things:

  • Pre-throw drills
  • Mound work/velo
  • Arm care routines

 

Plyos aren't just for “velo” work.

 

They can be great to help pattern mechanical changes and to incorporate into some of your arm care exercises.

 

2. Radar Gun (Feedback)

 

I love the radar gun simply for the instant feedback it gives you.

 

Did I throw it harder or slower than the previous pitch?

Why?

What happens if I try this?

 

The instant feedback allows you to discover what works and what doesn't.

 

I also love it for low or medium days to make sure you are not exceeding a certain velocity and staying within the appropriate range on any given day.

 

3. 3D Strap (Mechanics)

 

This is a very versatile tool that can be used for throwing or in the weight room.

 

You can use it on the upper or lower body to assist or resist rotation.

 

This can be super helpful when trying to improve lower or upper body mechanics.

 

4. Dot Balls (Pitch Design)

 

If you've been following me for any length of time, you know how much I love these!

 

By placing a dot on the correct location (depending on the pitch type) you get instant feedback on if the ball is spinning the way you want it to or not.

 

While you won't know the exact movement, you will have a general idea based on where the dot is spinning.

 

This is great for catch play and bullpens.

 

No more asking your partner if it was a good pitch or not. You'll know right away.

 

5. Differential Balls (Command)

 

These are a staple for me when developing command.

 

The different sizes force players to make bigger adjustments pitch to pitch.

 

The more adaptable you are, the easier it will be to adjust in game.

 

6. (Bonus) TrackMan and Edgertronic

 

Obviously luxury items, but hands down the best when developing pitches!

 

Honorable mentions:

  • Water bags/balls
  • Weighted baseballs
  • Core velocity belt
  • Medicine balls
